The university administration has purchased a software, 'Turnitin', at a cost of Rs 7.61 lakh per year and has appointed A S Chakravarthy, Assistant Professor, as Coordinator, Anti-Plagiarism Software.

Hyderabad: In a move to strengthen doctoral research, Osmania University has made a plagiarism check mandatory for all PhD theses submitted for evaluation.

Accordingly, the university administration has purchased a software, ‘Turnitin’, at a cost of Rs 7.61 lakh per year and has appointed A S Chakravarthy, Assistant Professor, as Coordinator, Anti-Plagiarism Software.

Dr Chakravarthy will be the admin while a maximum of 250 faculty members, including Heads of Departments, Chairpersons of Boards of Studies, Deans etc., will be given access to the software.

In a press release issued here on Thursday, the university said research scholars would have to submit a soft copy to the supervisor concerned, who would run the software and issue a system-generated report to be forwarded to the coordinator.

“If the similarity index is below 25 per cent, the coordinator will issue a clearance for submission. If the similarity index exceeds 25 per cent, the scholar will be given the option to edit or rewrite portions of the thesis. This modification will be allowed only before final certification by the coordinator,” the release stated.

The scholars are required to pay user charges of Rs 500 per thesis. Given that around 1,000 theses are submitted annually in the university, the amount will help meet the operational costs of the software, the varsity administration said.

The Turnitin software accepts 400 pages of material or a file of 40 Mb size at a time. The coordinator plans to undertake an awareness programme for faculty members and research scholars.
